Soysambu Conservancy borders about 75% of Lake Elmenteita and is part of a Ramsar Site, Important Bird Area and World Heritage Site

Migratory birds visit Soysambu usually beginning in September and pass through or stay until May.
Most notably are the population of Great White Pelicans and frequented by both lesser and greater flamingos.
There are also 2 seasonal rivers flowing from the catchment area.
